The future of liberalism/leftism?

The future of liberalism/leftism?

To conservatives, leftist politics are an abomination: Homo loving, baby killing, god hating tax and spenders. That's how those on the far right characterize those on the left. But it is a caricature, as is the left's stereotyping of the right. Those on both extremes love to stereotype and caricature those on the other side of the political divide. It makes it easy to lump them all together without recognising the multifaceted divisions that exist on both sides of the political fence.

That said, where do you see the future of liberalism and leftist politics in the big picture of the American political landscape? George W. Bush left the Oval Office as an extraordinarily unpopular president. Obama was whisked into office with grand promises of "Hope and Change". Well, I'm sure both sides will agree that there has been change. Those on the far right are now occupying the same place the far left were during the midst of the Bush presidency: Angry and outraged!

Is Obama pushing things too far? Or do you think this is the direction the majority of Americans want to see their country head in? Obamacare has now been signed into law and it is going to be a near impossibility to repeal it in the short term. It would have to be a disaster of unparalled proportions for that to happen. Are we going to see a continuing shift to the left politically or will there be an instinctive, knee jerk reaction against this incrementalist move towards bureaucracy and big government?

What do you think? :ugeek:

It seem liberalism is progressiveness.. All government all the time . No to capitalism. I do not care if you are a homosexual,,if you choose to hate god and get abortions it is up to you. I see you all against capitalism states rights aside from that then, I see you all as not tolerant to anything but your feelings and that is wrong! It seems to me it is your way or no way...

You sounds like a libertarian crateb. How would you describe yourself politicially?

I must admit I have a lot of time for libertarians and libertarianism in general as I do think people have a right to be free from government interference in their lives.

I too believe in less government. I'm 40 years old now and I am so tired of the concept of the nanny state!

I am an adult. Do not tell me what I can eat, smoke or do, especially in the privacy of my own home. I can look after myself and make decisions about my life that suit me.

I think the older you get, the more you resent government interference in your life. As you age you get all that idealism knocked out of you... mugged by reality as some call it. Eventually all you want is to be left alone to live out your days on your own terms.
